Simon Bull: 65 Year Old Artist Goes Viral on Instagram

LISTEN ON 👉 APPLE, GOOGLE or SPOTIFY

Simon Bull’s story is non-stop reinvention. After a successful artist career (focused on traditional gallery art sales), he was thinking about retiring. But instead of shutting it down, he posted his first Instagram video. New possibilities immediately emerged, and Simon reinvented himself, yet again.

I talk to many, many artists who think they are too late to find success with social media. Some people have a bias that social media is a younger person's game, and we strongly disagree with that bias!

We hear from many talented artists who are reluctant to promote their art on social media because they feel that they have something holding them back—their age, their tech abilities, their skills, etc.  But I believe that creatives can and should do what they want at any age or in any circumstance they find themselves in, and Simon's story illustrates that point.

In this interview, he shares his journey in the art world and the impact of social media on his work. Simon shares how he has embraced the performance aspect of painting and the power of viral videos in reaching a global audience. Simon also discusses the intersection of his business and social media, highlighting the importance of social proof in the digital age.

I have been observing what successful artists do on Instagram, and I put all my favorite tools in this handy guide, “7 Habits of Successful Artist Instagrammers”. It’s free. Get it here. 👇

In this episode we’ll hear how Simon:

  • Embraced the performance aspect of painting to engage and captivate his audience.

  • Leans into controversy and negative comments on social media because they generate engagement and connection with his fans.

  • Used social media as a platform to showcase his work and build social proof, which has been an essential growth tool.

  • Simplified his filming process and focused on creating engaging content rather than high production value.
